12-11-23 Spruce Railroad Trail Closed – Rock fall!

A significant rockfall on the Spruce Railroad Trail has necessitated a full trail closure at the East portal of the Daley-Rankin tunnel. The rockfall has done significant damage to the bridge deck adjacent to the tunnel (rocks punched BIG holes RIGHT THROUGH 4″ thick decking), blocked the tunnel entrance, and damaged the entrance framing. The rockfall originated above the area covered with rock bolts and netting, and the condition of the face cannot be directly viewed from the trail. Trees and other debris are entangled in the netting above the trail, and not secure. Until ONP can get resources out there to safe the origin area of the slide, any approach would be unwise, as further debris are sure to come down unexpectedly.

While the time required to safe the workzone and remove the debris is unknown, we expect this to be an extended closure.
